THE
COMFORT & SAFETY OF YOUR OWN HOME:
Death of Nations, Part 1
A Traveling, Site-Specific Theatre Event
Conceived & Directed by Josh Fox
Written by Josh Fox with members of the International WOW Company
Lights by Charles Foster
Created and Performed by members of the International WOW Company
"Mr.
Fox [is] one of the most adventurous impresarios of the New York
avant-garde"
"Hallucinatory...chilling...stunning... In a theatrical landscape
that often suffers from blandness and predictability, [Death of
Nations Part 1] is that rare show where you never know what will
happen next." --Jason Zinoman, New York Times, 9/2/04
Act One: Board a chartered bus for a tour of historical Brooklyn,
as our host, Lucy Kendrick Smith, leads you through terrain both
physical and metaphysical. Travel over the Williamsburg Bridge and
past the Navy Yard, home to prisons and movie studios. Learn about
George Washington and the Battleof Brooklyn, the Canarsee Indians
that once ruled this land, the origin of consciousness, and many
other little known facts.
Act Two: At the WOW HAUS, our warehouse/rehearsal space in Brooklyn.
Catch a glimpse of hooded prisoners chained to rooftop shingles,
movie stars roaming the halls, and accountants washing bloodstained
laundry. Visit our bedrooms where intimate moments are shared between
nightmares. Park in our garage as it slowly fills with exhaust fumes
and exhaustion. We invite you into our home, our New York, our America
a country caught on the parallax
between devastation and primal beauty.
